Introduction


Papal Arms

This blog will look at the names and Coats of Arms of the Popes from Papa Honourius (III) Tertius, 1216 - 1227, to Papa Franciscus (I).

Entries will be grouped by Centuries. The layout will be structured are below:

Papal Arms used; Papal Name and dates of Reign; Personal Name and dates of birth and death.


Papal Titles

The official list of titles of the Pope,  are: Bishop of Rome, Vicar of Jesus Christ, Successor of the Prince of the Apostles, Supreme Pontiff of the Universal Church, Primate of Italy, Archbishop and Metropolitan of the Roman Province, Sovereign of the State of Vatican City, Servant of the Servants of God.

The best-known title, that of "Pope", does not appear in the official list, but is commonly used in the titles of documents. The title "Pope" was from the early 3rd century an honorific designation used for any bishop in the West.In the East it was used only for the Bishop of Alexandria. Papa Marcellinus (d. 304) is the first Bishop of Rome acknowledged in sources to have used the title "Papa". From the 6th century, the imperial chancery of Constantinople normally reserved this designation for the Bishop of Rome. Papa Gregorius (VII) Septimus declared it reserved for sole use by the Bishop of Rome.
